But first things first: Before you book that first flight, we need a way to make it happen.
We have to find you a way to help you do what you love and get paid.
And it’s not as hard as you may think, because you’re about to seize this opportunity at the best time possible for entrepreneurs. You live in the Information Age.
Work Locally, Sell Globally
By building an online business, you’ll be within reach of 300 billion Internet-connected souls. There’s a huge pool of people out there, willing to buy what you have to sell.
All you have to do is find a tiny subset of that 300 million to build an audience around. How tiny? About a 1,000 true fans will do. That’s a drop in the bucket compared to the 7 billion people (and counting) that live in the world today.
Helpful products and smart marketing will take you far, not matter what your area of interest is.
Before you find those 1,000 true fans, you need to find out: a) What you’re good at, b) what you absolutely love to do.
Skills + Passion = Profitable Products
We all have strengths and skills.
I guarantee you that there are things you know about that I have zero to very little knowledge about. You were innately born with strengths that can easily develop into skills with a little training.
Strengths are things you have an aptitude for. Perhaps you are good with numbers (by the way, I suck at math). Or you may be good at organizing and planning. Maybe you’re the go-getter among your friends, or the peacemaker.
The point is, your friends, family and those around you would easily be able to point out which strengths you’re a natural at. It’s that obvious to you and everyone around you.
When you apply those strengths, let’s say “being good with numbers” and learn how to apply them to a job-like task (take accounting classes, for example), you develop a marketable skill. You can then do someone’s bookkeeping.
Your skills are strengths that have been developed into quantifiable tasks. Identifying your skills is the first step towards creating the ideal Lifestyle Business.
It’s a very uphill climb to try to build a business around something which you known nothing about. Much easier to focus on that which is already familiar to you.
What if You Don’t Have Some Required Skills?
Does that mean you can only build a business around what you personally know? Of course not! And it’s nothing to be worried about either.
That’s where the magic of “outsourcing” comes in.
Whatever you’re not that great at (let’s say coming up with a creative design for your website), there’s someone else out there whose exact skill happens to be “creative website design.” Not only does it take off the pressure and frustration of dealing with something you’re not familiar with, you’re now free to work on those things which you’re best at.
Let your skills and strengths take center stage and delegate the rest.
Once you’ve defined your skill-set, it’s time to cherry-pick which ones will suit your line of work best. This is where passion comes in.
What is Passion?
I define passion as that which you can’t wait to wake up in the morning and do all over again. It’s what brings you the most satisfaction. What you love to do, day in and day out.
Not everything that brings you satisfaction can be turned into a marketable business. I love to eat pizza, but unless I turn that love of pizza into something that others can enjoy (teaching others to make their own pizza, for example), it’s unlikely that anybody will pay to watch me eat pizza.
You have to care enough about your topic, live and breathe it enough, that you become the go-to source for information.
Notice I didn’t say “expert”. I’d rather go to a mechanic that can solve my car’s problem inexpensively than to meet with the person who actually designed my car. I just want my car fixed, not a breakdown of what each electrical component does.
Expertise is relative.
It goes back to what I said at the beginning:
You’re already good at something. If you’re passionate enough about a subject, you can teach it to someone who knows zero to very little about it.
Your goal is to help others solve a need they have, not write a thesis to be presented at a university conference. Keep it simple for your audience and let your passion infuse with energy your presentation of the subject.
Putting it All Together
The trick is to figure out what you love to do for a living, find what you’re passionate about, and use your skills to create a product or service that solves a need for your audience.
More importantly, you need to tailor this solution as a product or service that can be delivered online.
I keep stressing that you need to sell a product or service because blogging is not a business. Blogging is just one of many marketing tools at your disposal. And all these tools serve one purpose: to sell your product or service.
Don’t equate “selling” with high-pressure tactics. Selling is more than just putting up a “Buy Now” button on your website. It’s about cultivating a brand, your brand, that people will trust and respect. Even if some in your audience never ultimately never buy anything from you, they will tell others that you’re someone whose opinion and advice can be trusted.
Monetizing Your Skills
There are three ways that you can effectively create a business online that can be run from anywhere:
1. You can sell digital products online: This includes anything that can be downloaded ( i.e. ebooks, art, audio recordings, video recordings, etc). This is not limited to your own creations. You can also sell other people’s products via affiliate marketing.
2. You can sell your services: Anything that can be customized for a customer and delivered online is a channel to monetize your skills. From designing a website, to coaching a client on how to organize their home more effectively, to creating a personalized travel itinerary for someone, the possibilities are endless.
3. You can teach others, individually or as a group: It’s technically easy to create a knowledge-base about a topic and give access to others via a membership-type forum. If you’ve ever taken a course, anywhere, you can probably create a rough outline about how to get from point A to point B. Provide the right material and support through a private forum, where students can benefit from questions as they learn together.
Depending on what you’ve decided to help people solve, you may choose to create a single downloadable product, offer personalized coaching, or a step-by-step course lasting anywhere from three days to three months.
The choice is yours!
The important thing, before you launch your website and do anything else, is to think of the problem you’re addressing first and then offer a solution. Your passion and skills will dictate the niche, but the process is always the same:
Help others solve a problem first. The rest is just marketing to let everyone know about your solution.
